I have the awesome opportunity to study abroad at University of Stirling, Scotland from
June 9th - July 7th!!!
I couldn't be more excited to share some pictures and stories with you guys once I get there - but in the mean time, here's a look at what Scotland is like and how I'll be spending my time there.
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, known for its beautiful, unspoiled scenery. Its landscape is a mixture of highlands, lowlands, over 790 islands, and over 31,000 freshwater lochs (the Scottish word for lake). I'll be visiting one of these islands - Isle of Skye - and the famous Loch Ness while I'm there! Two of Scotland's major cities are Edinburgh and Glasgow. My university is located in Stirling, which is situated about halfway in between the two, forty five minutes away from each.
University of Stirling is home to mostly international students during the summers, so while I'm there I'll get to experience all kinds of culture - not just the Scottish culture around me but the cultures of my classmates and suite mates as well. It features one of the most scenic campuses in the UK, featuring its own loch and lots of green space. I'm so excited to call Stirling home! While I'm there, I'm be taking a class about Scotland's public education system and a class about short story writing. Once I get back to Illinois State, these two classes will transfer to 6 general credits.
I've wanted to study abroad for so long, but honestly, being a collegiate athlete, I thought it wouldn't work out. I was SO excited when I found out that ISU had summer programs. I can't believe that it's actually happening and I'm leaving soon! Originally, the plan was to study abroad in London, England. ISU offers a study abroad trip there just for elementary education majors. However, then I stumbled upon the Scotland program and couldn't stop thinking about it. I chose University of Stirling because it was just overall a better fit. I was looking for a beautiful, scenic place to get out of my comfort zone, meet lots of new people, experience new things and gain new perspective. Nothing fits that description better than Scotland!
So, here I go. "Here I am. Send me, Lord." As of May 29, I leave in 10 days!! I absolutely cannot wait to take this giant leap of faith and I'm so excited to share the journey with you guys. Here's to new experiences!!
